Intro to Ropes, Ice Climbing, and Glacier Travel is a perfect blend of adventure, skill-building, and camaraderie. Over the course of this immersive workshop, you’ll spend your days mastering glacier basics—learning how to walk confidently in crampons, identify key glacier features, rappel safely, and use an ice axe with purpose. You’ll also dive into essential climbing skills like knot tying, belaying, and, of course, scaling the ice. But it’s not all about technique—each evening, unwind around the fire with a hearty dinner, a glass of wine, and great company. This workshop isn’t just about climbing; it’s about connecting with like-minded adventurers, embracing the stunning Alaskan wilderness, and creating memories that last far beyond the ice.

What you’ll learn

Prepare to immerse yourself in the essentials of glacier travel and ice climbing, all while enjoying the breathtaking Alaskan wilderness. This workshop is designed to provide you with the foundational skills you’ll need to safely navigate glaciers and tackle your first ice climb—while having fun and making new friends along the way!

Skills You’ll Master:

  • Crampon Technique: Learn how to walk with confidence on icy terrain.
  • Glacier Features: Understand key features of glaciers, from crevasses to ice formations.
  • Rappelling: Safely descend vertical ice and rock surfaces.
  • Ice Axe Fundamentals: Gain basic skills in using an ice axe for climbing and self-arrest.
  • Knot Tying: Master essential knots for climbing and safety.
  • Belaying: Learn the critical art of securing and supporting your climbing partner.
  • Ice Climbing: Experience the thrill of scaling your first frozen waterfall or ice face!

What to expect:

This workshop takes place at our exclusive campus, nestled in the stunning surroundings of the Matanuska Glacier and the breathtaking Talkeetna Mountains. Enjoy the perfect blend of adventure and comfort as you learn new skills in style.

You’ll stay in beautifully appointed shared canvas bell tents, each designed for relaxation and comfort (maximum of four guests per tent). Start each day with a delicious, hearty breakfast at camp, and then venture out on your glacier adventure. We’ll pack lunches to fuel you for the day’s exploration of ice climbing and glacier travel. After a thrilling day, return to camp for a refreshing charcuterie board and a signature drink, followed by a comforting, hearty dinner around the campfire.

Whether you’re learning to scale ice or making new friends under the Alaskan sky, every moment is designed to be an unforgettable experience in nature, all while enjoying the perfect balance of rustic charm and luxury.

Schedule:

August 14th, 7:00-10:00PM: Feel free to arrive at our campus to check in and meet the rest of the folks you’ll be spending the weekend with. Drinks and light snacks will be provided. Feel free to bring your own dinner for that evening.

August 15th: We will stay at our outdoor classroom to get dialed equipment, rope knowledge, and go over glacier etiquette before heading out to the ice for an interpretive trek to understand the fundamentals of what makes a glacier more than just a block of ice!

August 16th and August 17th: We will spend all day on the ice putting our classroom knowledge to the test. All students will get the opportunity to practice ice climbing techniques, become proficient belayers, and work in close proximity with a rope professional to work on advanced techniques.
