This backpacking workshop is designed for adults of all experience levels eager to build confidence and competence in overnight wilderness travel. Whether you’re preparing for your first solo trip, joining group backcountry adventures, or simply looking to strengthen your outdoor skills, this course provides a solid foundation. You’ll learn essential backpacking techniques—like gear selection, efficient packing, backcountry cooking, and navigation—while also covering crucial skills such as emergency preparedness and Leave No Trace principles.

What you’ll learn

Gain the skills and confidence to embark on your own backcountry adventures. This workshop blends hands-on practice with expert guidance, ensuring you’re prepared for life on the trail. From packing your bag to cooking in the wild, you’ll leave with the knowledge and tools needed to explore the outdoors safely and responsibly. Here’s what we’ll cover:

  • Gear Basics: Learn about the must-have equipment for backpacking, from backpacks and sleeping systems to cooking gear and navigation tools.
  • Packing Smart: Master the art of efficiently packing your bag to balance comfort and weight for an enjoyable hike.
  • Backcountry Cooking: Plan and prepare lightweight, nutritious meals for the trail.
  • Leave No Trace Principles: Understand best practices for minimizing your impact on the environment.
  • Navigation Skills: Get comfortable using maps and compasses to confidently find your way.
  • Camp Setup & Safety: Practice setting up a safe, efficient camp and review basic emergency procedures.

By the end of the weekend, you’ll have the practical skills and confidence to plan and enjoy your own backpacking trips—ready to embrace the adventure ahead!

What to expect:

This backpacking workshop blends hands-on learning with real backcountry experience. We’ll start at our exclusive campus, surrounded by the stunning Alaskan wilderness, where you’ll dive into the fundamentals of backpacking—gear selection, packing techniques, backcountry cooking, and emergency preparedness.

Once you’ve built a solid foundation, we’ll hit the trail for an overnight adventure, putting your new skills to the test in a real-world setting. You’ll set up camp, cook meals outdoors, and navigate the backcountry—all with the support of experienced instructors.

By the end of the weekend, you’ll return to campus with not only the skills but also the confidence to plan and embark on your own backpacking journeys. This is more than just a workshop—it’s a stepping stone to a lifetime of adventure.

Schedule:

July 10, 7:00-10:00PM: Feel free to arrive at our campus to check in and meet the rest of the folks you’ll be spending the weekend with. Drinks and light snacks will be provided. Feel free to bring your own dinner for that evening.

July 11th: We will spend the day in our outdoor classroom going over the basics of preparing for an overnight adventure in the backcountry.

July 12th: We will have one last gear and emergency procedure review, we’ll hit the trail to spend the night in the Alaskan backcountry and put our knowledge from the day before to the test.

July 13th: After waking up outside we’ll break down camp and start making our way back to our base. At campus we’ll unpack bags and unpack what we learned that weekend before all heading home.
